About Us
Our 2021-2022 Officers and Board of Directors
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Theatre Arts Club is to present stage entertainment, encourage & develop amateur dramatic talent, provide fellowship, friendship & fun through social activities, and award a scholarship every year to an outstanding female drama student.
What We Do
TAC produces two shows a season for the enjoyment of our members and their guests. Members contribute their talents by acting, directing or working backstage. In addition to our theatre productions, we raise money for the Eva Woodbridge Victor Scholarship Fund, and organize activities where we all go out and do something fun! This allows us to build lasting friendships and keep our members connected.
Club History
The Theatre Arts Club, a Michigan nonprofit organization, was established in 1910 as a dramatic club for women only.
For the first 15 years, performances were given in many different locations. In 1925, Players built their beautiful Playhouse
and invited the women to produce their shows there. The Playhouse has been our home ever since.
We believe we are the oldest women's theatre group in the country. We have contributed to relief efforts for both World Wars I and II.
In 1952, we established the
Eva Woodbridge Victor Scholarship Fund
as a tribute to Mrs. Victor, one of our founding members.
Upon her death in 1952, Mrs. Victor bequeathed a monetary gift to the Theatre Arts Club to be used specifically for scholarship awards.
Every year since then, the Theatre Arts Club has awarded a scholarship to an outstanding female drama student at Wayne State University.
Several of our scholarship recipients have gone on to careers in Hollywood, on Broadway and in television.
We are also the trusted stewards of the Florence Steep Fund. Mrs. Steep, who served as the club president in 1967-69,
was a member of TAC for over 50 years. Upon her death in 1991, Mrs. Steep bequeathed a monetary gift to the Theatre Arts Club
for the purpose of maintaining the club's ability to perform local stage productions.
While the social expectations for women changed from when the club was originally formed, the Theatre Arts Club
remains as a women’s-only club, continues to be dedicated to its purpose, and we have a lot of fun doing it!
Membership Dues
If you are interested in women's theatre, you are
invited to join this multifaceted, warm and friendly group. Yearly dues are $75.00 which entitles you to attend our
performances at no additional cost.
